Historia de Curves
In 1976, Gary Heavin (founder of Curves® International) had completed 3 years of his university career in Medicine. At that time Gary became aware of the need to take care of one's health through appropriate physical exercise. Practising sports doesn't only prevent physical impairment but also prevents the onset of illness. At the age of 20, he bought a gymnasium which was about to close down and turned it around into a successful business venture.

At the age of 25 he was the owner of 6 similar establishments, all of witch were exclusively for women. In these centres the clients were educated, insofar as was reasonably possible, on the importance of regular exercise and maintaining a well-balanced diet. At the age of 30 Gary built a chain of centres for training & weight management exclusively for women, then... he lost everything. While reconstructing his business and his personal life, Gary applied many of the lessons he had learned on the path through success and failure.

Diane Heavin, co-founder of the company, worked initially for a newspaper in Gary's town and worked in design, advertising and marketing and handled the Sports and Fitness section. She uses over 25 years of experience in the industry developing advertising packages that Curves® franchise owners receive every 3 months. These packages contain useful information about the business, in addition to advertisements ready to be publicized and promotional material for (both internal and external) use to make the task of franchise owners a lot easier.

In 1992 Gary and Diane opened their first "Curves®" centre in the city of Harlingen, Texas. This new concept of an exclusive centre for women was such a success that they began to franchise in October of 1995. They opened 50 centers in the first 12 months of operation, 250 in 24 months, then 750 in 3 years that by January 2000 there was more than 1.250 in the whole USA. On average, a Curves® Fitness Club was being opened every 14 hours. In January 1999 and once again in January 2000 the magazine Entrepreneur (an authority in small and medium scale industries) classified Curves® as the N.°1 franchise in the list of new franchises and N.°14 among the fastest-growing franchises (Annual Franchise 500).

There are now thousands of Curves® centers worldwide.
